Quick – how many facilities can you think of that are used 24/7, 365 days per year? Perhaps your first thought was of a few megastore or convenience-store chains. Or maybe a prison. Recently, I traveled to Las Vegas, and have added casinos to the list.

Most important on the list are hospitals. Fortunately for us, hospitals never close. Yet being open all the time takes its toll on the facility, as a wide range of workers are always on the job.
It also poses maintenance challenges, because cleaning and other work needs to be done while care-related functions continue.

These are just a few of the many challenges facing healthcare interior design today.

There are a host of codes and regulations that must be adhered to, such as Public Health codes, Fire Marshal codes, HIPAA/privacy issues, and infection-control constraints, just to name a few.

In hospitals, there are people’s emotions at every level – from the extreme joy at the birth of a healthy baby, to the extreme grief of a loved one’s sudden and tragic death.

There are facility users of all sorts: staff, doctors, patients, visitors, volunteers, consultants, sales representatives, delivery personnel, and clergy.

There is every level of education and every level of job – from housekeeping to brain surgery and everything in between.

And of course, there are budgets!

Armed with all of these challenges, the healthcare client comes to the interior designer and says, “Here you go. Oh, and by the way, be creative! Make our space flexible for uses we don’t even know about yet. Make our space functional and beautiful and life enhancing.
Help us create a space that we can use to recruit and retain staff, and use for marketing our services in this extremely competitive market.” Delivering effective and appealing solutions
to these challenges is very satisfying, and for me, being able to affect someone’s healthcare experience in a positive way is as good as it gets.

Given these parameters, where does a healthcare interior designer start? With communication. First and foremost, talking with a client to gain an understanding of their facility, their needs, and their expectations is key. After that, the interior designer must develop ideas and options for further consideration. Most often, these ideas manifest as themes that offer a meaningful story for the healthcare facility.

Inspiration can come at any time from any place. For one project, I was inspired by a book that a facility used in its leadership training. “The Man Who Planted Trees” talked about a shepherd who planted 100 acorns each day for 40 years, transforming a barren land into a lush forest. The hospital admired the shepherd’s many qualities – such as caring, patience, persistence, and commitment – and wanted to use this as an example of how one person has the ability and power to make a profound difference to their surroundings. An indomitable spirit of committed people can make a visible and tangible difference in the world. These were important characteristics for the hospital leadership to have.

With this as a starting point, I thought of an acorn and what it becomes in the future: a tree.
A “tree of life” as a metaphor for the hospital was very fitting. I took it one step further and thought, what do we love about trees in West Michigan? Trees change dramatically with the changing seasons. Next, I had to translate this into a tangible design concept. I did this by dividing the floor plan into four areas, one for each season. I used blue and green (basic colors found in nature) as the mainstay color palette to unify the space, then changed accent colors and patterns to reflect each season. To facilitate wayfinding in the facility, I used icons such as an acorn, a leaf, a flower, and the sun. This created an environment that was both appropriate and meaningful to this particular healthcare facility.

This is just one example of how interior design can be used to personalize and give meaning to a healthcare facility. To stay competitive in a fiercely competitive market is no small task. Smartly planned interior design can support a facility’s vision to be a destination of choice.

Moments of overindulgence throughout the year can really pack in the unnecessary pounds. That’s why it’s a great time to begin DIY projects to make the fat melt away. DIY projects are simple, fun and easy to do. All you need are the materials (which often can be found lying around the house) and a lot of loving patience.

Wallpapering

One reason why people dislike wallpapers is often the wallpaper peels after a few years. There’s a way to defeat this- by making sure that the walls are dry enough to accommodate the adhesive. An easy way to do this is through natural ventilation. Open the windows and doors and allow the surface moisture of the walls to evaporate.

According to Lance King, a contractor with over ten years of experience:

“Airing out your walls will show you what kind of damage you already have. Moisture is not something that goes away completely, but at least after a few hours you’ll see what parts of the wall still have even surfaces.”

After drying, carefully apply the adhesive on the wall with a small paintbrush. Use liberal, long strokes and use the natural flow of the brush to help spread the adhesive.

Make sure that the adhesive is spread evenly in thin vertical strips to make the installation of the wallpaper easier. A woman with an average weight of 60 kilograms can burn up to 300 calories while wallpapering. That’s a lot of flab off for a few hours work!

Basic gardening

According to Susan Wilkins, a horticulturist and a DIY enthusiast from London:

“Getting a garden up for the first time might be hard work. But at the same time, you’re investing in a form of aesthetic pleasure after a few weeks- something that can never be matched by artificial blossoms.”

If you want flowers to bloom in your garden all year long, take a short trip to the nearest horticulturist to purchase perennials. Daisies, roses and other common flowers generally have long lifespan and can withstand nearly all kinds of soil conditions.

The first step is to dig holes 15-30 cm deep. The compost mulch will be stored in the holes, before a surface layer is added to stabilize the plant. Depositing mulch increases the longevity of plants and increases the moisture-storing capacity of the soil.

If you want to plant vegetables, plant beds should be three to four feet long and at least 15 cm apart. Antagonistic plant species such as onions and tomatoes should never be planted together.

Garden maintenance

Maintaining a small garden is actually quite simple after the planting. Weeding will take up most of your time (make sure that you gently pull out the weeds so as to not disturb the roots of your other plants).
The application of mulch is also a good idea, as mulch placed near the root of the plant attracts good insects like ants, which consume pests.

Watering should be done every two days, and should be carried out with a small sprinkler. If you’re diligent enough, you can easily burn 700 calories a day from just taking care of your new garden.

Installing a home security system is a great way to provide extra protection for your home and family. It’s not terribly expensive and it is a very effective deterrent to would-be thieves. This article is going to discuss three reasons why installing a home security system is a good idea.

1. Peace of mind.
Your home is the one place on this planet that you should feel safest. When you get home after a long day and you go inside and close the door behind you, you should feel safe and secure and not have to worry about possible intruders. When you leave your house you should also feel that your valuables are safe. Having a good security system will go a long way to giving you this piece of mind.

2. Greatly reduce the chance of burglary.
The reason a good home security system can provide that peace of mind is because they actually work. Homes that are protected by a home security system are three times less likely to be broken into than homes without security systems. Burglary is a crime of opportunity. Leave a window open or a door unlocked and you make it that much easier for a criminal to enter your house. A thief is always going to look for the easiest target. If your home is protected by a quality alarm system and your neighbors house is not it doesn’t make sense for a criminal to even bother trying to get past your alarm system when it’s so much easier to just hit the house next door.

3. Discount on homeowners insurance.
Peace of mind and actually reducing the risk of being victimized by a burglar are probably the best reasons to install a home security system. But another good reason is because you may actually be eligible for a discount on your homeowners insurance premiums by installing a burglar alarm. Because having alarm system actually does work to deter thieves, your insurance company is less likely to have to pay out benefits because of damage caused by someone breaking into your house or to replace stolen personal property. Many insurance companies will actually give you a discount on your monthly premiums if you have an alarm system. Call your insurance company to inquire about such discounts.

These are just three reasons you may want to consider installing a home security system, there are many others. You can also equip your security system with things like carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors which can be life savers. If your security system includes a monitoring service that service will not only call the police in the event of a break-in but will also call the fire department in the event of a fire. If you’re away from home and a fire breaks out a monitoring service could save your home from being completely destroyed. There are many good reasons for installing a home security system. It’s a small investment that could pay off in a big way.

A gardener’s inspiration and motivation for gardening can vary, but most of the time, gardening is a hobby done either as a recreational form of natural art, or as an experiment in self-sufficiency. And with so many plant varieties available ranging from flowers to vegetables, it would be quite rare to find two identical gardens.

Most gardening takes place in regions with temperate weather, and each season bears the potential for new beauty. Planting can take place anywhere from early spring through mid-autumn depending on the location, climate, and plant.

Getting your gardening materials ready

Before you get started on your gardening project, there are a few tools and materials necessary to begin. Of course, you’ll need a plot of land or area within a yard to plant your garden. The size and design of the garden largely depends on what kind of garden you will grow.

Once you have determined how your garden will be physically laid out, you’ll need some basic tools to get started. A hoe or small plow will be needed to turn the soil in which you will plant. For small flower gardens, a hoe or even a small trowel may be sufficient. For larger gardens and for many vegetable and fruit gardens, a plow, or rototiller, would probably be more desirable.

After you have planted your seeds or plants, they will require water. A garden hose or watering bucket can be used to help irrigate the garden, particularly in months when rain may be at a minimum. Automatic sprinkler and irrigation systems may also be installed to maintain your garden.

Finally, some gardeners insist on the use of fertilizers and plant foods. While these may not be necessary, they may have a significant impact on your garden. If pests and other insects may be a problem, you might also consider investing in a safe insecticide for treating your plants.

Common challenges faced in gardening

We aren’t all “green thumbs,” but everybody faces the same basic problems in the planting and maintenance of a garden. First of all, insects and other pests can cause serious issues for an otherwise healthy garden. Many nurseries can offer you guidance in common pests and plant diseases that might be prone to your region or type of plant, and should be able to help you pick out a pesticide.

The weather can also seriously hamper your efforts at maintaining a successful garden. Brutally hot temperatures, lack of rain, and other weather conditions during the growing season can stunt growth, prevent blooms, or even kill entire gardens. And, of course, unexpected changes in the weather can catch even the most experienced gardener off-guard. Be prepared for anything in terms of weather, and this will help prevent surprises later on.

Gardening for beauty

Flower gardens greatly add to the overall landscaping of a home or business, and can add color at any time of year. Understanding the difference between annuals — which bloom only once and typically die at the end of the season — and perennials — which, if cared for properly, will return again season after season — can be of great benefit to establishing a garden.

Many flower gardens feature a set of perennials as part of the landscape, requiring the gardener to simply fill in the open space with annuals each year. Popular annuals for flower gardening include impatiens, begonias, daisies, tulips, and pansies. Some gardens may be designed around a color scheme or theme, and are often designed to be incorporated into the larger landscaping theme of the home or business.

Gardening for food

Many gardens are created for the sole purpose of growing and harvesting edible fruits and vegetables. In some regions of the world, fruit and vegetable gardening is so popular that nearly every home on every street or road has at least some size garden filled with fruits and vegetables.

While planting and growing flowers from seed is fairly simple, knowing when to plant seeds for a vegetable garden can be a more of a challenge. Many novice gardeners choose to purchases small plants to grow, leaving most of the work in maintenance of the garden.

Most vegetable and fruit gardens are planted in rows, which makes working in the garden, the weeding and watering for example, easier. Planting in rows also eases in harvesting the yields of the garden, as a person can walk through the rows next to plants to harvest and pick the food. Common plants in fruits and vegetable gardens include beans, tomatoes, all varieties of peppers, corn, and radishes. Most fruit and vegetables are summer gardens, although the yields may not be harvested until fall for some vegetables and fruits such as gourds and pumpkins.

For those who like plants for beauty, or those who want to grow fresh food in their backyard, the rewarding hobby of gardening is well worth a try.

Kitchen Remodeling
Saving Money On Your Kitchen Remodel

The kitchen is the center of the home for many families. When buying a home you may remember a main selling point is the Kitchen’s nice layout. Kitchen remodeling can be very expensive. What are the factors to consider when trying to determine the cost of a new kitchen?

The dollar amount or cost for a new kitchen varies greatly depending on the size of your kitchen, how many cabinets there are, and what types of materials you chose. When Planning a new kitchen you could go under budget by choosing your materials wisely. Your Kitchen planning could give you the money for one or two extras!

Are you willing to make a few compromises for your new kitchen? Would you be willing to do a little research? Then you may be able to achieve what you desire! Careful planning is the key to your kitchen success and finding your right cost! Soon the pieces of the puzzle will fall together and you will have the answers you need to have that new Kitchen!

Consider what work you can do yourself as you plan for a new kitchen. Will installing your new kitchen yourself save you dollars? If you are capable – then installing your new kitchen yourself should reduce your kitchen remodeling costs. This is if you have the skills of doing the work correctly the first time. Having a professional come in to fix your mistakes later could actually increase your dollar amount.

What skills should you have to install your own kitchen? Many people have gone in over their heads thinking installing a new kitchen was easy and missed some important key factors as they started to remodel their kitchen.

Before starting your kitchen project ask yourself a few key questions. Are you comfortable using tools? Are you willing get your hands dirty? Will your family be OK with a mess at hand for months? Do you have the motivation and persistence needed to carry the remodeling project through?

I will Repeat the last line for EMPHASIS – Will you complete this kitchen project and carry it through? At first it always seems like a good idea to people. However if you aren’t up to the task, it will take longer to finish your remodel project and might even increase your remodeling dollars and the total cost

If you have the determination needed to carry the remodel through until the end with the above qualifying factors you will succeed! Wishing you the best and remodeling success!

Kitchen and Bath Areas
GFCI Electrical Wiring
Remodeling Wiring for Kitchens and Baths

Remodeling Wiring for Kitchens and Baths

Kitchens and Bath areas require special electricity wiring for electrical outlets.
The electrical outlet locations are also much different than in other portions of homes.
What are electrical requirements for kitchen and bath areas?

As electrical requirements change frequently be sure to check with your certified local electrician for any special requirements you and questions for your kitchen or bath remodeling. This a summary of a few of the guidelines from the national electrical code a few years back.

In the kitchen area the NEC requires no more than 6 fee from a given location to be from an outlet which would make the outlets no more than 12 feet apart with special outlet locations in the kitchen area or over counter-tops.

Counter-top receptacles in your kitchen must be served by two or more different circuits. Each kitchen counter space that is wider than 12 inches must have its own outlet, with no point along than countertop being more than 24 inches apart horizontally or 48″ of space between the outlets in the kitchen.

Often electricians run a three wire 240 volt cable from the service panel and provide two new 120 volt circuits. One side of each receptacle is served by one of the circuits while the other side is served by the other circuit, giving two circuits available at each outlet which gives the term split circuit. Protection for over-current on a split circuit used a double breaker which is linked in the circuit’s panel.

Ensuring kitchen and bathroom safety, the NEC requires GFCI protection in all new bathrooms, and in kitchen outlets within six feet of the kitchen’s sink and other locations around the house. Adding ground fault protection to existing circuits makes sense in any bathroom or kitchen.

A “ground Fault” is a current leak caused by faulty electrical insulation in a tool or appliance which is plugged in. This current leak may be too small to trip a circuit breaker for your kitchen or bath area, yet can prove fatal to anyone standing on a wet floor or touching a grounded metal plumbing fixture for an example.

There are three GFCI types. One is a circuit breaker installed in the main panel. A second type of GFCI outlet is installed in the outlet box as a replacement for an existing outlet, and there also is a simple plug in GFCI outlet or extension cord. Installing a feed through GFCI outlet is the most common for kitchen and bath areas with more than one outlet. A feed through GFCI allows ground fault protection to all of the receptacles beyond the outlet in the same circuit.

Although adding GFI outlets is very simple step when remodeling kitchen or bathrooms ]people wanting to do work them selves too often make the fatal mistake of missing the minor addition of the correct type of outlet. Be sure to understand this step, or hire an electrician to make sure your kitchen and bathroom areas have the right gauge electrical wiring at the right spacing apart, and at very least ensure your circuits in areas such as Kitchens and baths where moisture can be present is protected with a GFI style of outlet.

We hope this helps as you start your new kitchen planning and kitchen remodel. Please let us know what information you were looking for on our website does not have the content you are looking for so we can be sure to include it in the future – Thank You!

The most common bathroom sink shelf can be found usually under the sink. This is to add more storage space and at the same it will not affect the overall aesthetic of the entire room. Apart from the purpose of putting organization in your bath, it also helps you make good use of your available space in the room.

Such shelves are usually customizable according to the measurement of the space you have. They can also go well placed around the pipes and would really require not a single tool for you to assemble it. While for those who have bigger spaced bathrooms, you can opt for the types that can go above your sink instead and adorn it with some mirrors.

The standard bathroom sink shelf is done without any drawer and they are shorter or better yet narrower than the ones found in your kitchen. But during these times of great economic crises, it is understandable for many people to really cut off the budget. There are lots of do it yourself shops that you can find today, even online, where you can find affordable and yet space saver tools and home parts.

One great organizational solution that you can do in your bath instead of totally constructing for new shelves is to shop for mini plastic shelves or woven baskets to be placed right under your sink. Just make sure that they won’t be wet each time the room is used. You can also try to put in some anti mold tools if you happen to be putting your clothes.

Kitchens are one of the most difficult areas to organize because they are quite often the central hub of the home. Not only is it where we cook meals but it is also often where mail, backpacks, schoolwork, keys and anything else that we drag in the door with us often ends up. So in addition to organizing everything in the kitchen cupboards, you also have to think about all of the other “stuff” that collects in your kitchen. Where do you start with this whole kitchen organization project? Here are a few kitchen organization tips that can help.

Start small
Since getting the kitchen organized is one of the biggest organizational challenges in your home, start with a small area that is going to have the biggest impact on how you live. This can be a stumbling block for many people so let me explain what I mean by this. If the part of your kitchen that drives you crazy is the table or counter where all of the mail, schoolwork, etc gets dumped, then focus your kitchen organizing efforts on that area first. If this is the area of the kitchen that you are going to organize first, then also make sure that this area of your kitchen stays organized before you move onto something else.

Because it is not just about getting your kitchen organized one time, it is about keeping your kitchen organized. That is where the real challenge lies. So if you just organize the paper that comes into your kitchen one day but by the next day it is already a mess again, you have not really accomplished anything. One of the most helpful kitchen organization tips I can give you is to keep working with organizing one area of your kitchen until it stays organized. Do not move on to another area until the one that you are working with has stayed organized for at least a week.

Too much stuff
As with any other home organization project, getting your kitchen organized means getting rid of the things you no longer use and the things that are unsafe for you to use. So if you can’t remember the last time that you used that dust-covered appliance in your cupboard or if you can’t even remember what it does, it is time to get rid of it. Look at every pot, pan, dish and utensil in that kitchen and make a note of when you used it last. You need to get rid of it if it is not something that you use frequently. The only exception to this is anything that you use seasonally.

The other important thing that you need to look at as you do your kitchen organization is all of your canned goods, spices and packaged foods. This is an important kitchen organization tip because if it is expired, you need to throw it away. If you do not use it or like it, throw it away or donate it to your local food shelf. This is especially true of spices. We tend to gather and collect spices that we never use.

Counter space is not storage space
When you organize your kitchen, keep stuff off of your counters. It will make your kitchen look and feel cleaner. The kitchen counter in your home is not another cupboard so don’t act like it is one. Any appliances that you are not using daily should not be on your counter. This is more of a diet tip than a kitchen organization tip but also keep food, especially snacks, off of your counters. It will help to keep you from snacking. Out of sight, out of mind!

As with all organizing tasks, getting your kitchen organized is about creating a useable space that makes your life simpler. Regardless of how you organize your kitchen, make certain that it fits into that end goal.
